Team Captains are the heart and soul of Relay For Life.  They are counted on to recruit and motivate co-workers, family, and friends to be on their teams.  They are the connection between the team and the local American Cancer Society office.

Fighting cancer is a team effort.  The strength of people coming together for a common cause is greater than the strength of one.

A. Get your team together!

  1. Decide what type of team you want...family, friends, co-workers, place of worship, etc.

  2. Plan a get together and invite friends, family, co-workers, whomever you want!  Have a little food and fun.  Show them a Relay video and share with them what Relay is all about.

  3. Once you've signed them up to be on your Relay team, fill out your Team Registration Form and return it.

  4. If you are a family team - you may want to find a local business to sponsor your team.  If you are a business, organization or place of worship team - ask them to sponsor your team.

  5. Turn in your Team Registration Fee.

B. Now that your team is formed, you need to motivate them!

  1. Dedicate your team's efforts to someone - a cancer survivor or someone lost to cancer.

  2. Set team goals and motivate your team to reach those goals!

  3. Attend team captain meetings and bank nights.  These meetings are full of fun and important information!

  4. Share Relay news and updates with your team members!

  5. Hold regular team get-togethers to build spirit and keep everyone informed.

  6. Encourage team fund-raising as a way to raise more money.

C.  And don't forget...

  1. Engage your team members to help with jobs during the Relay such as cooking, decorating and setting up the campsite, taking pictures, and cleaning up.

  2. Encourage your team to sell luminarias.

  3. Schedule your team members to walk at different times during the event so that at least one person is walking on the track at all times.

D.  One Last Thing...Have Fun and Be Sure to THANK Your Team!

Thank your team for their commitment to participate in the Relay For Life.  Give each team member a warm welcome when they arrive.  Consider sending a thank you card to each of your team members after the Relay thanking them for being such a GREAT team and for all their hard work!
